AI Search Readiness Audit: Scope and Deliverables

Find the gaps between your real expertise and the evidence search systems can understand

An AI Search Readiness Audit diagnoses the website, content, entity signals, local data, technical accessibility, measurement and conversion paths shaping discovery across Google Search, Maps and AI-assisted experiences.

You receive a prioritised roadmap not a promise of “ranking in ChatGPT.”

It is for businesses that want a defined scope before committing to an AI SEO, GEO or AI-search project.

See what the audit includes

Important: AI answers vary according to the query, location, user context, model, time and available sources. This audit identifies findings and recommended actions. It does not guarantee citations, rankings, traffic, leads or revenue.

Is this audit right for you?

This audit is for businesses that want more than a generic “AI content strategy.” It helps you understand why your company, products, services, locations or expertise may be difficult for search systems and AI-assisted experiences to access, identify, verify or match to relevant customer questions.

You are likely a good fit if competitors appear in AI-assisted answers while you do not, your SEO foundations have never been assessed for AI-assisted discovery, you operate multiple locations, or you need a defined scope before comparing GEO or AI SEO proposals. The audit is also useful when technical, content, local, PR and analytics teams need one priority order.

If competitor recommendations prompted the project, read Why Does ChatGPT Recommend My Competitor and Not Me? before the audit. It explains why one answer is a diagnostic sample rather than a permanent ranking.

This is not the right engagement if

You want guaranteed placement in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI featuresNo credible provider can guarantee this

You cannot provide access or implementation ownershipArrange access and capacity before the audit begins

What the audit examines

The audit does not assume that AI visibility can be fixed with one plugin, llms.txt, schema type or batch of articles. It reviews the evidence stack that helps search systems interpret information about your business.

WorkstreamWhat we examineWhat it helps answer
Technical accessibilityCrawlability, indexation, robots directives, rendering, canonicals, sitemaps, page health and internal linksCan search systems access and interpret priority pages?
AI-search accessOAI-SearchBot access where ChatGPT Search is in scope, plus server, CDN and security restrictions where assessableAre relevant crawlers being blocked unintentionally?
Search baselineSearch Console queries, pages, markets, branded demand and existing performance patternsWhere is visibility already present, weak or fragmented?
Entity clarityBusiness name, organisation data, services, people, official profiles, contact information and structured dataIs the company represented as one consistent entity?
Content and intentServices, products, locations, customer questions, comparison content, authorship and internal linksDo priority pages answer the questions valuable customers ask?
Expertise and proofCase studies, first-hand experience, reviews, sources, update dates, credentials and claim qualityIs there visible evidence supporting trust and selection?
Local and multi-location dataGoogle Business Profile, Apple, Bing, citations, NAP, reviews, location pages and local schemaCan platforms identify where you operate and what each location offers?
Third-party evidenceDirectories, media, partnerships, marketplaces, associations and independent mentionsWhat external evidence supports or weakens the business identity?
Competitor source traceA limited, agreed set of prompts, competitors and visible source patternsWhy might competitors be easier to match to specific questions?
Measurement and conversionReferral visibility, events, calls, forms, bookings, landing pages and follow-up pathsCan discovery be connected to qualified demand?

For local businesses, the audit builds on the foundations in How to Get a Local Business Mentioned in AI Search, then tests how those foundations are implemented across your own site and public sources.

How the audit works

The method is inspectable. Every material finding should show what was reviewed, what evidence was observed, why it matters, how urgent it is, who should own it and what should happen next.

Phase 1: Kickoff and input collection

Typical duration: 2–3 business days after access is available

We confirm the business model, markets, audiences, products, services, locations and commercial priorities. Together, we define the important questions, customer journeys and three to eight competitors or alternative choices included in the comparison.

We also agree on markets, languages, subdomains, priority URLs, sample size and scope boundaries.

What you provide

Required inputs include the website, priority offers or locations, target markets and commercial goals. Search Console read-only access is strongly recommended; GA4, sitemap, competitor, conversion and existing audit information improve the diagnosis. Local scopes also need Google Business Profile information and, where relevant, Apple and Bing data. Regulated businesses must explain applicable compliance limits.

Most clients need 60–90 minutes for kickoff and preparation, followed by a short factual or access follow-up.

Phase 2: Technical and visibility baseline

Typical duration: 3–5 business days

We crawl agreed sections and inspect robots directives, indexing, canonicals, sitemaps, templates, rendering and internal links. When ChatGPT Search is in scope, we check whether relevant pages appear blocked from OpenAI’s search crawler and note observable server restrictions.

Search Console evaluates query, page, market and date patterns. GA4 supports referral and conversion analysis where tracking is reliable. Tools surface evidence; they do not produce a universal “AI rank.”

Phase 3: Content, entity and evidence review

Typical duration: 4–6 business days

We assess priority pages against customer intent and map the business identity across relevant owned and third-party sources. The review covers services, locations, expertise, proof, reviews, mentions and conversion routes.

Sampling depends on complexity:

Site sizeDefault approach
Under 100 indexable URLsReview all core commercial pages plus representative supporting content
100–1,000 URLsReview priority templates, 20–40 key URLs and thematic content samples
1,000–10,000 URLsTemplate analysis, priority sections and performance-based samples
More than 10,000 URLsTailored enterprise scope by market, template or business unit

Complexity matters more than URL count. A multilingual, regulated or multi-location business may require more work than a larger brochure site.

For location-led companies, this phase uses your NAP and schema data, Apple Business Connect presence, Bing Places listing and location architecture as one connected system.

Phase 4: Prioritisation and roadmap

Typical duration: 2–3 business days

We score findings by relevance, evidence, impact potential, effort, dependency and risk. Each recommendation receives a suggested owner.

PriorityMeaningTypical example
P0: Fix firstMaterial barrier to access, accuracy, credibility or conversionBlocked pages, incorrect business data or broken tracking
P1: High-value nextImportant improvement with clear commercial relevanceWeak location pages, inconsistent entities or missing proof
P2: Build systematicallyStrategic work requiring planning or coordinationCase-study programme or third-party evidence strategy
P3: Test or monitorLower-certainty or emerging opportunityExperimental formats or secondary query themes

The final roadmap separates quick corrections from larger projects and sequences them across 30, 60 and 90 days.

What you receive

You receive a working audit package, not a generic slide deck. Every deliverable is tied to the scope agreed in the proposal.

DeliverableWhat it contains
Executive summaryMain risks, opportunities, limitations and recommended starting point
AI Search Readiness ScorecardAssessment across technical, entity, content, evidence, local data, measurement and conversion
Findings registerEvidence, affected pages or sources, recommendation, owner, effort, priority and dependencies
Technical accessibility reviewCrawl, indexing, canonicals, key-page access and bot-access observations
Content and intent mapPriority questions, current URL mapping, gaps and internal-link opportunities
Entity and source landscapeBusiness-data consistency, official profiles and third-party evidence gaps
Local visibility moduleGBP, Apple, Bing, reviews, citations, location pages and schema where applicable
Competitor source traceDated comparison of the agreed prompts, competitors and visible source patterns
Measurement planReferral, landing-page, call, form, booking and attribution recommendations
30/60/90-day roadmapActions, owners, effort bands, sequence and dependencies
Readout workshopA 60–90 minute stakeholder walkthrough and Q&A

The measurement recommendations connect with the practical framework in How to Track Local SEO Leads: discovery is only valuable when it can produce and route qualified calls, enquiries, bookings or purchases.

Preview of a sample finding

Until a genuine redacted client example is available, this should be labelled as a sample format, not a client result.

Multi-market, multilingual, regulated, e-commerce, marketplace and multi-location organisations may require a longer or phased scope.

How the audit is scoped and priced

The audit is scoped around business and website complexity—not URL count alone. A single-location service company, international SaaS platform, e-commerce catalogue and franchise network require different samples, data sources and stakeholder input.

Pricing is influenced by:

  • Number of pages, templates, products and services.
  • Locations, countries, languages and subdomains.
  • Available Search Console, analytics and CRM data.
  • Regulation and review requirements.
  • E-commerce feeds or marketplace participation.
  • Competitor and prompt sample size.
  • Deliverable and workshop requirements.
  • Implementation-planning depth.
PackageBest forTypical focus
Foundation AuditOwner-led companies, consultants, single locations and early e-commerceCore technical, content, entity, local-data and conversion review
Growth AuditEstablished SaaS, e-commerce, healthcare and regional servicesDeeper performance, competitor, evidence and measurement analysis
Multi-Location or Enterprise AuditFranchises, chains, marketplaces and international brandsTemplates, markets, locations, governance and cross-functional roadmap

Your proposal should state the URL sample, locations, markets, data sources, competitors, workshops, deliverables and implementation assumptions. You should be able to compare the scope—not only the promised outcome.

What happens after the audit?

The audit gives your team an informed starting point. Implement the roadmap internally or request support for selected workstreams.

Options include:

  • Internal implementation using the findings register and workshop.
  • A sprint for selected P0 and P1 fixes.
  • Ongoing SEO and AI-search strategy support.
  • A local visibility programme covering profiles, pages, reviews, citations and schema.
  • Analytics and conversion-tracking implementation.
  • A quarterly re-audit to review progress and new platform changes.

For multi-location teams, the LocalBusiness schema guide may support implementation, but markup must remain connected to accurate pages and listings.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI Search Readiness Audit?

It is a structured diagnosis of the technical, content, entity, local-data, third-party-evidence, measurement and conversion foundations affecting discovery across traditional and AI-assisted search. It produces prioritised findings and actions, not guaranteed placements.

Is an AI search audit different from an SEO audit?

There is substantial overlap because Google’s AI features use normal Search eligibility. This audit retains the technical SEO foundation and adds focused review of entity clarity, public-source consistency, crawler access, third-party evidence, local data, controlled AI-query diagnostics, measurement and conversion.

Can you guarantee visibility in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. Answers and sources vary by prompt, location, context, model, time and platform changes. The audit identifies barriers and opportunities but cannot guarantee citations, traffic or leads.

Will you check whether ChatGPT can access my website?

When ChatGPT Search is within scope, we check whether relevant content appears to be blocked from OAI-SearchBot and review available technical access signals. Eligibility still does not guarantee inclusion.

How long does the audit take?

A standard audit usually takes 10–15 business days after all required access is available. Complex enterprise, multilingual, regulated or multi-location scopes may take longer.

Can you implement the recommendations?

Yes. Implementation can be scoped separately after the diagnostic so responsibilities, effort and commercial terms remain clear.
