Most local businesses focus on Google Business Profile, and they should. But Google is not the only place where customers search for a phone number, hours, directions, services or a nearby provider. At The Elham, I treat Bing Places for Business as a practical part of local visibility: claim the listing, make the facts accurate, connect it to the right page and track useful enquiries.
Bing Places will not replace your website, reviews or wider local SEO work. It closes an avoidable visibility gap by giving you direct control over how your business is represented in Bing Search and Bing Maps.
Direct answer: Sign in to Bing’s business portal, search for the existing listing, claim it or add the business, import accurate Google Business Profile data or enter it manually, complete verification and audit the live result. The name, location, phone, hours, services, photos and website destination must match the real business.
What is Bing Places for Business?
Bing Places for Business is Microsoft’s free platform for claiming and managing information about a local business. Microsoft directs owners to Bing Places when they need to add or change business information shown in Bing Maps search results.
Depending on the business type, market and available features, a Bing listing may display:
- Business name
- Address or service area
- Phone number
- Website
- Opening hours
- Map location and directions
- Business categories and services
- Photos
- Social, booking or appointment links
Microsoft notes that some features vary by country or region, so the fields and verification options in your account may differ.
Why should a local business claim Bing Places?
Customers do not all follow the same route. A person may find a business through Bing Search, Bing Maps, Microsoft Edge, branded search, voice search or an AI-supported experience. Bing does not need to outperform Google to justify correcting the listing.
An unclaimed or inaccurate listing can send a customer to the wrong page, show old hours, route a call incorrectly or confuse two branches. That is a conversion problem, not just an SEO problem.
Your website should remain the source of truth. Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, directories and review platforms should reflect the same identity. If the details conflict, fix your name, address and phone information first.
Prepare your business information before setup
Build one verified business-data sheet and use it to review every platform.
| Field | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Business name | The real customer-facing name used on the website and signage |
| Address | Full address, including suite, unit, floor or building details |
| Phone | A working number customers can reach |
| Website | The best service or location page, not automatically the homepage |
| Hours | Regular, holiday, seasonal and appointment-only hours |
| Category | The closest description of the main business activity |
| Services | Services genuinely available at this location |
| Service areas | Only places the business actually serves |
| Booking or quote link | A live, tested conversion path |
| Description | A clear, factual summary of the business |
| Photos | Current exterior, interior, staff, product or service images |
| Location status | Open, moved, temporarily closed or permanently closed |
If you plan to import from Google, audit Google first. My Google Business Profile setup guide covers the foundation, while this guide to choosing Google Business Profile categories helps prevent category sprawl.
How to set up Bing Places for Business
1. Sign in to the current Bing business portal
Go to bing.com/forbusiness and sign in using one of the account options available to you. Microsoft launched a redesigned Bing Places experience in 2025, so older tutorials may show a different interface or URL.
Use an account the business can retain, with a documented recovery route.
2. Search for the business before adding it
Search by business name, address and phone number. Check for:
- An existing unclaimed listing
- An old or moved location
- Duplicate versions of the same business
- An incorrect map pin
- Another business attached to your address
If the correct listing already exists, claim it. Creating another version can increase customer confusion and make future management harder.
3. Import from Google or enter the details manually
Bing supports importing business information from Google Business Profile. Microsoft says the redesigned import flow is intended to preserve important attributes such as the business name, hours and contact information more reliably.
Import is useful when the Google profile is accurate, but it does not replace quality control. Compare every field with your business-data sheet.
Choose manual setup when the Google data is wrong, Bing cannot identify the business or the location has special requirements.
4. Confirm the five details customers use most
Review these first:
- Business name
- Address or service area
- Phone number
- Opening hours
- Website or booking link
Use the real business name. Do not add a city, neighbourhood, service list, “best” or “near me” unless it genuinely belongs to the customer-facing name. Build relevance through accurate categories, services, location information and website content.
5. Select accurate categories and services
Choose the closest category for the main business activity. Add secondary categories only for active services, not to target extra cities.
The website should reinforce the same meaning. If a high-value service deserves more visibility, build a useful service page rather than forcing extra terms into the listing. This on-page SEO guide for small businesses explains the basic page signals to review.
6. Add accurate hours and conversion links
Check regular hours, holiday closures, seasonal schedules, appointment-only arrangements and temporary changes. Then test the phone number, website, booking and quote links.
Send the listing to the page that best continues the journey. A Newburgh branch should normally link to its Newburgh page with the relevant booking or contact action, not a generic homepage.
7. Upload real photos
Use current images that help customers recognise the business:
- Exterior, entrance and signage
- Reception or interior
- Team members
- Products, completed work or service environment
- Parking, accessibility or service vehicles when useful
Avoid stock-only imagery, photos from another branch or outdated surroundings.
8. Complete verification
Follow the verification method Bing offers. Use legitimate contact details and a truthful location or service-area configuration. Correct mismatched information instead of trying to work around verification.
9. Audit the public listing
After approval, search the business name, phone, address and core service with the city. Open the result in Bing Maps and test:
- Phone number
- Website and booking links
- Directions and map pin
- Regular and special hours
- Photos
- Categories and services
- Duplicate listings

Bing Places for multiple locations
Each legitimate branch needs its own accurate listing, verification, hours, phone route and website destination. Do not create listings for virtual offices, mailboxes, staffless addresses or cities without a genuine eligible location.
Before adding several branches, read my guide to creating business profiles for multiple locations. If a branch is new, use this local SEO new-location launch plan so the website, listings, tracking and customer information go live in the right order.
Track the listing URL, address, phone, destination page, hours, category, verification, duplicates, open actions and owner in one sheet. This makes it easier to compare local SEO performance by location fairly.
How Bing Places fits a wider local SEO strategy
Bing Places is a business-data task, not a complete growth strategy. It cannot compensate for weak pages, poor reviews, slow lead response or missing tracking.
A stronger local system combines:
- Accurate business information across major platforms
- Complete Google and Bing profiles
- Useful service and location pages
- A consistent process for earning authentic reviews
- Clear calls, forms, booking and direction paths
- Quarterly accuracy checks
- Lead and revenue reporting
If reviews are a gap, start with how to get more Google reviews and use a realistic competitor benchmark rather than chasing an arbitrary number. This guide explains how many reviews a local business may need.
How to measure whether Bing Places is helping
Measure accuracy first: correct name, phone, location, hours, website and services without duplicate confusion.
Then measure business outcomes:
- Bing referral traffic
- Visits to the linked service or location page
- Phone calls
- Form submissions
- Booking requests
- Qualified leads
- Revenue when attribution is reliable
Add a UTM-tagged website link where appropriate:
https://example.com/locations/newburgh/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=bing_places_newburgh
UTMs identify sessions after a listing click, not offline calls, directions or revenue. My guide to tracking local SEO leads explains how to connect calls, forms, bookings and CRM outcomes.
Common Bing Places mistakes
| Mistake | Better approach |
| Creating a listing without searching first | Find and claim the existing business before adding another |
| Importing from Google and never checking it | Audit every imported field |
| Adding keywords to the business name | Use the genuine customer-facing name |
| Sending every branch to the homepage | Link each listing to its most relevant location page |
| Creating virtual locations to target cities | Use only real eligible locations |
| Ignoring special hours | Update them before holidays and temporary changes |
| Using stock photos as the only proof | Add real location, team and service images |
| Tracking rankings alone | Measure calls, forms, bookings and qualified leads |
| Treating the listing as set-and-forget | Review quarterly and after every business change |
Frequently asked questions
Is Bing Places for Business free?
Yes. Bing describes Bing Places for Business as a free way to claim and manage a business listing.
Can I import my Google Business Profile?
Yes. Bing supports importing business information from Google. Review the name, address, phone, hours, categories, services and links afterwards.
Do I need Bing Places if I already have Google Business Profile?
Yes, if you want direct control over business information in Bing Search and Bing Maps. Google Business Profile does not manage your Bing listing.
Can I create a listing for every city I serve?
No. Create location listings only for genuine eligible locations. Represent service areas truthfully instead of creating fake branches to target more cities.
How often should I review the listing?
Review it quarterly and after changes to the address, phone, website, services, hours, booking process, name or location status.
Will Bing Places improve Google Maps rankings?
Not directly. Bing Places and Google Business Profile are separate systems. Accurate business information supports a consistent local presence, but it does not guarantee rankings on another platform.
Does Bing Places guarantee AI-search visibility?
No. Accurate business information can make your organisation easier to understand, but no listing guarantees inclusion in an AI answer, map result or lead journey.
Build a local visibility system, not another forgotten listing
Bing Places helps customers reach the branch, page or contact route. Its value disappears when the listing is forgotten.
Use one verified business-data source, assign ownership, review the public result and measure the actions that matter. Then connect Bing Places to the rest of your local SEO system instead of managing it as an isolated profile.
Want your business to be easier to find across Search, Maps and AI search?
I help owner-led local businesses connect their website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, reviews, local content and lead tracking into a practical visibility system.
